Shocking graphics reveal what high heels are REALLY doing to your feet

They make you look taller, leaner and more glamorous - just ask heel fanatic Victoria Beckham.
But our love affair with spindly stilettos is threatening to leave us alarmingly down at heel, according to a staggering new piece of research.
An infographic featured by The Washington Post illustrates, in shocking visual detail, the negative effect the stylish female's choice of footwear has on their bodies.

The diagram shows how wearing high heels places excess force on the inside of the knee - a common site of osteoarthritis among women.
One study found that knee joint pressure increased by as much as 26 per cent when a woman wears heels.

The height of your heels and a narrow toebox can create a thickening of tissue around a nerve between the third and fourth toes, which can lead to pain and numbness in the toes called Morton's neuroma.
Consultant podiatrist Mike O'Neill, from the College of Podiatry, recently warned that squeezing feet into smaller shoes can also cause long-term damage including arthritis, stress fractures, and trapped nerves, which may even require surgery or steroid injections.

Another common effect of wearing heels is bunions, a problem Victoria Beckham has admitted to.
Tight-fitting shoes can cause a painful bony growth on the joint at the base of the big toe, which forces the big toe to angle in toward the other toes.
A study found that one in five feet operations are to remove bunions.
Based on the average cost of private treatment of about £4,000, this equates to £10.5million a year.

The research also highlights an issue they have dubbed 'pump bump'- caused by the rigid backs or straps of high heels which irritate the heel and create a bony enlargement also known as Haglund's deformity.

Ankle injuries are also a huge cause for concern as high heels impair balance and a wearer is therefore at greater risk of falling, which could lead to a sprained or broken ankle.

High heels also cause the body's weight to be redistributed and prolonged wear can lead to joint pain on the ball of the foot called Metatarsalgia.

The higher a heel, the more damage it will have on your Achilles tendon as it causes it to tighten up and create pain.
And it seems that younger women are most at risk as a study found that the younger the woman, the higher their heels.
Roughly 20 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 own a pair of six-inch high heeled shoes. This compares with 10 per cent of those aged 25 to 34 and just 3 per cent of 35 to 44 year olds.

And it isn't just your feet and legs that are suffering as a result of vertiginous footwear.
Spindly stilettos also put strain on your posture by pushing the centre of mass in the body forward, taking the hips and spine out of alignment, as well as putting excess pressure on the forefoot.
Mr O'Neill said: 'There's absolutely no doubt women who wear high heels are putting themselves at risk of permanent injury in the name of fashion. Given a choice between a stylish pair of shoes or nice feet, many will go for the stylish shoes.
'However, the higher the heel, the more they tilt your body forward and the more you have to lean back to compensate. This can put your pelvis out of alignment and cause compression of the spine.
'High heels ram your foot forward, which squishes your toes together and can cause ingrown toe nails, rough areas of skin, blemishes, and calluses.
'And because your toes are squashed, the moisture gets trapped, causing soggy toes, which is a breeding ground for athlete's foot.'

Britain could face a return to Seventies-style power rationing to prevent blackouts

The disturbing news came amid warnings that the country may not be producing enough energy to keep the lights on by 2015.
Offices and factories could be ‘bribed’ to close for up to four hours a day during the winter to prevent households losing power.

In addition, nuclear power stations, which produced 26 per cent of Britain’s electricity when Labour was elected in 1997, now account for just 18 per cent.
Ministers say the previous government failed to protect our energy supply by commissioning replacements for ageing reactors.
Yesterday Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, promised £10billion for a new plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset that could power five million homes.
French firm EDF had demanded government cash to put towards the £14billion reactor.

Four Boko Haram members wearing women clothes arrested in Gwange.

Residents of Gwange area in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital have restricted their women from going out in the evening, following reports that Boko Haram members have now resorted to disguising as women, putting on female dresses while perpetrating evils and using the same method as a means of escaping arrest by soldiers and vigilante youth in the area.
DailyPost gathered that, four Boko Haram members were arrested on Saturday in Gwange ward, wearing women’s clothing and trying to escape arrest as a result of pressure mounted on them in the area by the vigilante youth who have been seriously hunting for the sect members particularly in Gwange area of the city.
According to a resident of Gwange, who pleaded not to be mentioned, the sect members are also wearing female clothing to hide their weapons in order to go and commit evil. “They have been doing that for a long time according to one of them who was arrested last month in Gwange and since that time, so many of them have been arrested and handed over to the security.” He said.
Speaking on whether the soldiers are killing them, he said, “They have been arresting them, but killing them, we do not know, because the soldiers always carry them to the JTF headquarters.”
According to him, even those that were arrested with ‘hijab’ last week Saturday, were beaten up by youth and handed over to the military for further interrogation.

How could 14-year-old Rilwan, a Primary Six pupil, ever think of killing his little cousin? Crime Reports gathered that Mrs Bola Olaniyi and Mrs Morenike Olaniyi are two women married to two brothers. The former, who is Rilwan’s mother, is married to the elder of the two brothers and due to circumstances, the latter and her husband with their children started living in the house bulit by the elder brother.

SIM registration: Subscribers condemn unsolicited messages by operators.

Ten days to the end of the Subscriber Identity Module registration exercise in the country, telecoms subscribers are uncomfortable with the seemingly endless text messages by telecoms companies urging them to either register their SIMs or complete the registration process.
Many subscribers are pained by the messages because their SIM cards have already been registered.
The complaints, which cut across the mobile operators, intensified after the industry regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission, said last month that unregistered SIM cards would be cut off from the telecommunications networks across the country come June 30 this year.
Some subscribers, who claimed to have registered their SIM cards many months ago, were also not left out in the message spree.
Those, who spoke to our correspondent, expressed worries over the delay by the telcos in sending such messages, especially those that had to do with updating data, when the deadline was just some days away.
Text messages sent to subscribers show a wide request by the telcos urging their subscribers to register their SIMs before June 30 to avoid being disconnected.
This format of messaging is common to all the Global System of Mobile telecommunication operators: Airtel, Etisalat, Globacom and MTN.
But MTN, in some of its messages, urged subscribers on its network to provide missing data spotted in the registration process.
The operator also promised to give a bonus credit of N400 to subscribers, who provided such updates.
